Snow-capped peaks of Rwenzori Mountains under a clear blue sky.

Into the Rwenzori Mountains

Through cloud forest and glacier — a highland trek to Africa’s hidden snow-capped crown.

Elevation begins not with ascent, but with intention. Begin in Entebbe, where the lake holds its calm, then head west to Ibanda — gateway to the Rwenzoris, where the peaks rise behind cloud like a secret kept in sky.

The trail begins in forest — damp, green, alive. Colobus monkeys leap above the canopy. Water slips through moss and root. Each step upward is a shift: bamboo thickens, air thins, light sharpens. By John Matte Hut, the world feels hushed and close.

Higher still, through alpine bog and giant lobelia, you reach the shadow of Mount Stanley. Elena Hut clings to the mountainside beneath its glacier crown. Then, before dawn — the summit push. Mt. Margherita emerges in ice and stone. Breath becomes intention. At 5,109 metres, you meet the edge of Africa’s hidden snow.

Descent brings silence of a different kind — ridgelines, river valleys, and the rhythm of return.

This is where altitude becomes awe, and the climb becomes clarity.

Day 1

Arrive in Entebbe, where the air is soft with lake breeze and the light lingers across the water. Take time to rest — this is a quiet beginning before the climb begins, a pause on the edge of something vast.

Day 2

Travel west toward Ibanda, gateway to the Rwenzori Mountains. The land begins to lift — green hills rising, villages scattered, clouds catching on distant peaks. By afternoon, settle in at the trailhead, where red roofs meet forest edge and the air begins to cool.

Day 3

Begin the trek, walking from forest floor to foothills. The trail winds through dense montane forest toward Nyabitaba Hut (2,650m), where black-and-white colobus leap between trees and rivers whisper beneath the canopy. By evening, mist gathers and the mountains draw you in.

Day 4

Climb higher through bamboo thickets and moss-draped heather. The forest falls away and the altitude sharpens. Reach John Matte Hut (3,350m), where rocky clearings open to valleys below and the peaks begin to show their shape.

Day 5

The trail turns wilder — crossing alpine bogs, glacial streams, and giant lobelia groves. Reach Bujuku Hut (3,962m), tucked in a shadowed valley beneath Mount Stanley’s eastern ridge. Water drips from rock, clouds swirl low, and silence settles into the stones.

Day 6

Ascend to Elena Hut (4,430m), entering the alpine zone where ice clings to crags and the light is thin. The air is quiet and brittle. Here, beneath Mount Stanley’s crown, the mountain feels close — not just seen, but felt.

Day 7

Before first light, begin the summit push. Crampons cut into snow and rope draws across ridge. At last, the top: Mount Margherita (5,109m), the highest peak of the Rwenzoris. Sky, glacier, and breath. Then descend to Lake Kitandara Hut (4,023m), where still water mirrors the peaks and the world slows again.

Day 8

Cross high ridgelines and open moorland as you descend to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261m). The terrain shifts once more — glacial outcrops giving way to valley forest and waterfall mist. The trail softens, but the mountains remain immense behind you.

Day 9

Return through forest to Nyabitaba, retracing old steps with new memory. River crossings, fern paths, light caught in branches — the rhythm of descent moves with thought and silence.

Day 10

Complete the loop and return to Ibanda, the circle now closed. The mountains rise behind you, their presence held in your breath. Rest comes easily, but the climb lingers.

Day 11

Drive back to Entebbe, passing back through hills, light, and memory. The Rwenzoris fade into cloud behind you — silent, glacial, unforgettable.
